LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR
By L. Kent Wolgamott
HOLLYWOOD---As it opens, “Trance” appears to be a highly pedigreed heist movie, but it is much more and much more transfixing than that -- which is exactly what you’d expect from Danny Boyle. The director of “Trainspotting,” “127 Hours,” "28 Days Later” and “Slumdog Millionaire,” Boyle turns another genre picture sideways, telling a complex tale of an art thief who loses his memory and undergoes hypnotherapy to get it back. “Trance” is so well crafted that, after you see it, you’ll be able to put the pieces together to form a more direct narrative in which everything makes sense in the order it occurred. But that’s not possible while it’s on screen. Instead, Boyle, the writers and the superb cast take us on a transfixing ride through the baffling darkness that is as good as film noir gets.
