RHODE ISLAND---Overcoming years of resistance, Rhode Island on Thursday became the 10th state in the country and the last in New England to approve same-sex marriage. Approval in Rhode Island followed a 16-year struggle in the heavily Roman Catholic state, with intense opposition from clerics and many Republicans. “It is an incredibly historic day for Rhode Island and the country,” said Julia Harvey, a Brown University student who is gay. Same-sex unions will be legal in the state starting Aug. 1. [link]
