A Jew is any person whose mother was a Jew. It is very much a family faith and the ceremonies start early, when a Jewish boy baby is circumcised at eight days old, but according to painter Elke Reva Sudin, few Jewish artists make the connection to their Judaism in their art. "Many Jewish Museums celebrate famous artists who 'happen to be Jewish' and have fond memories of growing up in a Jewish household. However, the connection to their heritage in the work itself is many times a stretch of the imagination." According to Sudin, Gary Baseman is one Jewish artist who is different, and that's why on this Mother's Day, Baseman's retrospective infused with Jewish golems (above), mezuzah, gefilte fish, as well as motherhood, is our NEWS OF WEEK.
