NEW YORK---"African Art, New York, and the Avant-Garde" offers a new approach to the contradictions of "primitivism" by focusing on the situation in America and the distinctive differences between the viewpoints of American artists and their European counterparts. This destructive process of deracination as tribal objects were removed from their geographical context and stripped of their cultural meanings defines the conflict at the heart of "primitivism." Among avant-garde European artists in the early 20th century, only Picasso seems to have appreciated that the sculptures embodied spiritual and other cultural meanings beyond their radically different conceptions of the human body and other natural forms.
